Events and Activities

The coronavirus pandemic severely impacted fundraising in 2020 - 2022, but fundraising has resumed.

An important update is the granting of a 25-year lease by the Government of Barbados for use of a property in Christ Church to establish the hospice.

SUMMARY

According to a Nation News Article (dated June 11 2025), Barbados will build its first hospice and palliative care facility at the Coverley Estate, Christ Church. The old Great House will be demolished and replaced with a modern center after a 2022 request from the Barbados Association for Cancer Advocacy (BACA). The Government has pledged to support this private venture by providing medications and allowing pensioners’ benefits to support their care.

Rising cancer rates and chronic illnesses make this a critical national health priority, and both WHO guidelines and past local assessments have recommended expanding palliative care services.

WHAT THIS SAYS

Barbados is finally creating a dedicated hospice where people with terminal illnesses can receive proper care, comfort, and support.

WHAT THIS MEANS

The country is moving toward a more modern, compassionate healthcare system that supports patients and families facing terminal illnesses.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

  • It fills a significant gap — Barbados has never had a residential hospice.

  • It provides dignified end-of-life care and enhanced support for patients with terminal illnesses.

  • It aligns Barbados with international hospice and palliative care standards.

  • It reduces strain on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and improves the quality of life for patients and their families.
