The Barbados Diaspora Collaborative USA (BDC USA) grew out of the efforts of the late Prime Minister of Barbados David Thompson to encourage the Barbados Diaspora to expand its involvement in development activities and initiatives in Barbados.
In January 2010, the Barbados Cancer Association USA (BACA), Inc. promoted the idea of creating a US collaborative for just that purpose and pitched the idea at the annual meeting of leaders of US Barbadian organizations held at the Barbados Consulate General at New York.
BDC USA was seen as a vehicle to pool resources for greater impact given the large number of Barbadian organization in the US particularly in the New York region and US east coast.
The collaborative draws its support from members of the various Barbadian umbrella organizations such as the National Association of Barbados Organizations (NABO), the Coalition of Barbadian Organizations, NY (CBONY), the United Barbadian Planning Committee (UBPC), from non-umbrella Barbadian organizations and from unaffiliated individual Barbadians and friends of Barbados in the US Diaspora.
BDC USA expects to support major initiatives to benefit the Barbadian community in the US and in Barbados.
BDC USA was incorporated in New York in August 2012 and has filed for tax exempt status under the US federal tax code.
The primary mission of the BDC USA is to act as a vehicle and conduit for the support of projects that benefit the US Barbados Diaspora and Barbados.
Areas of endeavor include, but are not limited to health, culture and the arts.
